Cantorion Rhos is thrilled to announce the appointment of Ruth Evans as our new Musical Director.
She is a conductor, director, creative producer and arts leader from Llanarmon-yn-Ial in the Clwydian Range. She studied at Oxford University with a choral scholarship then gained a Masters in Music from the University of Wales, Bangor in musicology and performance.
Choral music has always been at the heart of her career and she is a conducting tutor for UK choral charity Sing for Pleasure. Ruth has conducted choirs across Wales, Chester and London including Landmark Sound (West London), Cor Dewi Sant, Canu Conwy, John Lewis Cardiff Choir, Cor Meibion Caerwys and Chester Music Society Alumni Choir.
Recently, Ruth directed the opera “Gresford: Up from Underground/Gresffordd: I’r Goleuni Nawr” by composer Jonathan Guy for Wrexham’s multi-faceted arts organisation NEW Sinfonia. She also works as a Chorus Director for their NEW Voices community chorus, working with Principal Conductor Rob Guy. Her extensive artistic management experience includes roles at National Youth Choir (UK), Glyndebourne and Welsh National Opera.
As an Executive Producer, Ruth has overseen multiple releases on the NMC Recordings label, including the 2023 Ivors Classical Award-winning “Sol” by Ben Nobuto. Her production credits also span the BBC Proms, Royal Albert Hall productions, North Wales International Music Festival concerts and Llangollen International Eisteddfod performances.
Ruth is on the Board of Directors for the Welsh Music Guild and the London Handel Festival. She is passionate about commissioning new music, community arts participation and Welsh rugby!
Caroline Morris – Assistant Musical Director
Caroline grew up near Wrexham and following success at the Urdd Eisteddfod, National Eisteddfod and the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod went on to study at the Royal College of Music as a saxophonist.
Her career has taken her all over Europe and Asia as a musician, teacher and adjudicator. She returned to the Wrexham area in 2006 and combines family life with a busy teaching practice and performance schedule.
Caroline became accompanist in 2006 and Deputy Musical Director in September 2010.
