Cantorion Rhos on tour
Congratulations to Cantorion Rhos on their successful tour in Portugal. Conductor Rob Guy and Bethan Griffiths (our accompanist on the tour), were delighted with the enthusiastic and appreciative audiences at the concert venues. The choir’s repertoire contained new items and included Sanctus and The Lord’s My Shepherd from Rutter’s Requiem, which was performed at St Giles Church, Wrexham earlier this year.
Bethan Griffiths, a 2nd year student of piano and harp at the Royal College of Music, London enthralled the audiences with her piano solos by Brahms, Debussy and Rachmaninov and together with the choir received a standing ovation for her performance.
The first concert was at St Paul’s Anglican English Church at Estoril on the Lisbon coast where the choir was based for the duration of the tour. Many in the audience had travelled some distance to hear the choir and were very appreciative of both the choir’s and Bethan’s performance.
The Museo Jose Malhoa in Caldas da Rainha proved to be a magnificent venue for choral singing and was a new experience for the choir. Here, there was a superb buffet meal of local dishes and a guided tour of the museum prior to the concert which was fascinating and gave an insight to the culture of the area.
Free time was spent by some in the hotel pool, others chose to walk to the nearby village of Cascais or take the train to Lisbon.
There was an organised trip to the small but quaint town of Obidos on the final day, where one could taste local food and wine and amble through the streets at leisure, or walk around the town’s ancient walls.
The hotel accommodation, food and wine, superb weather and general ambience of the Lisbon coastal area were all contributory factors to the success of the trip.
Many thanks are due to Martin Coggon, this year’s choir Chairman, for his careful planning in organising the tour.

Llongyfarchiadau i Gantorion Rhos ar ei llwyddiant ar daith ym Mhortiwgal!
Pleser mawr i Rob Guy, arweinydd, a Bethan Griffiths cyfeilyddes y cor ar yr achlysur yma, oedd brwdfrydedd a gwerthfawfogiad y cynulleidfaoedd a ddaeth i’w clywed.
Cuflwynwyd eitemau newydd yn cynnwys dau ddarn o Requiem John Rutter a berfformiwyd gan y cor yn Eglwys San Silin ym mis Marwrth. Profiad newydd i’r cor ac uchafbwynt y daith oedd canu ym mhrif neuadd Amgueddfa Jose Malhoa yn nhref Caldas da Rainha.
Cafodd gyfraniadau unigol Bethan ar y piano, darnau gan Brahms, Debussy a Rachmaninov gydnabyddiaeth arbennig pan gododd y gynulleidfa i’w traed.
Mwyniant oedd cael tywydd hyfryd, gwesty ardderchog a bwyd a gwin da gydol y trip.
