A Concert for Easter with Cantorion Rhos

Posted by Sally

This is the concert that we have been working really hard for and that we are really looking forward to. On Saturday 21st March at 7:30pm we are singing at St Giles Church, Wrexham. Our concert will include John Rutter’s Requiem and we will be performing with the NEW Sinfonia Ensemble and Lleisiau Clywedog.

The Requiem is one of John Rutter’s best loved and most widely performed choral works. The seven pieces use texts from the Book of Common Prayer and the Psalms and is one of the most popular compositions of the last thirty years.

We are very pleased that Mervyn Cousins will be our organist for the evening. Mervyn (our joint president) was our Musical Director before Robert Guy took over at the helm, so it is nice to welcome him back for the evening.

New Sinfonia was established in 2011 and is an orchestra based in North Wales that provides performance opportunities for outstanding professional young musicians. They have performed at the North Wales International Music Festival, collaborating with Karl Jenkins and Nicholas Cleobury in 2012, and Prof. Paul Mealor in 2013. In 2014, they were awarded their first Arts Council of Wales Grant Award.

We are pleased to welcome back Rachael Marsh who will be our soloist for Rutter’s Requiem. Rachael has been an active member of many choirs from a young age. She has explored different types of music, but her roots remain in classical music. Rachael has previously performed at the BBC proms as part of a large youth chorus made up from the National Youth Choir or Wales and the BBC Chorus in the performance of Bernstein’s Mass.

Another performer on the evening is Robert Owens. Robert is our deputy accompanist and  is really getting involved with the choir. He regularly gives choristers singing exercises at the beginning of rehearsals to warm up those voices. He is currently studying A Level Music at Coleg Cambria alongside going to the Junior Royal Northern College of Music. He is looking forward to studying at the Royal Northern College of Music with his current singing teacher Jeffery Lawton, having accepted an unconditional offer.

Tickets are only £10 and are available from St Giles Church on 01978 355808 and Cantorion Rhos on 01978 355043. Tickets will also be available on the door.
